The Spicy Skinny on One Spice That BLOCKS the Formation on New Fat Cells

Archives for January 2016

When it’s time to season your food, we all know that we should skip the salt shaker (unless it's real sea salt).

But did you know that several studies have suggested that we should do the exact opposite with the pepper mill?

It turns out that piperine, the main substance found in black pepper, may be an effective fat-fighting weapon. Piperine is also what makes pepper spicy.

Scientists have found some remarkable health benefits that come from black pepper.

It’s known to:

  • increase nutrient absorption
  • reduce inflammation
  • offer hope to vitiligo patients (the skin disease that some know as “Michael Jackson disease”)

Some studies have even shown that black pepper can help prevent cancer!

The Science of Pepper and Piperine

A new study has reported that it might be able to block fat cells before they form.

The study only looked at mice cells in a lab, and the pepper compound was 100 times more concentrated than what's on your table. It's still promising because it reduced fat in the bloodstream.

And this study doesn’t stand alone.

    • In 2010 a study added black pepper to the diets of mice that had been forced into obesity. This ended up shifting the amount of visceral fat in the mice’s bodies. Visceral fat is the belly fat that gives us an apple shape and increases the risk of heart disease. Scientists concluded that Piperine was the thing that made the healthy difference.
    • Adding a small dose of piperine to lab animal diets was tested in an Indian study in 2011. The results were just as encouraging. Cholesterol levels went down, and so did fat mass and body weight.
    • And in 2013 a study showed that piperine regulated metabolism by lowering inflammation.

With all these health benefits, it’s no wonder that black pepper has been so valued for centuries.

The spice – which is only native to India – was traded back as long ago as 1000 B.C., and was even used as a commodity.

Black pepper was so highly prized that finding a cheaper way to get it was one of the reasons for Christopher Columbus’ journey.

So how can you get more black pepper in your diet?

Try this Strawberry Pepper Smoothie:

2 cups strawberries, hulled

1 cup fat-free Greek yogurt

handful ice cubes

juice of ½ orange

1 tsp black peppercorns, crushed

5 mint leaves, finely chopped

Put the strawberries in a blender with the rest of the ingredients. Once smooth, taste and add more orange juice or more pepper if desired. The pepper really elevates the flavors of the other ingredients too!

It’s easy enough to start adding more black pepper to your diet – just reach for the pepper mill and use it freely.

Are you a tea lover like me?

I find that there are few things as easy to make and as good for you. And tea is incredibly comforting to drink.

Walk down the coffee and tea aisle of any store and you’ll be surprised at how many types and flavors there are.

Even better, a lot of them can help you lose weight!

That’s right. Tea has lots of great benefits, including helping you fight off sickness and clearing up your skin.

When you choose the right variety, it can also help you stave off hunger and boost your metabolism!

300x300midAd1

Here are some of the teas that are best for helping you in your weight loss journey. Happy sipping!

1. Oolong Tea

Oolong tea comes from the same plant as green tea, but it’s processed differently. This gives it different benefits.

Oolong has higher levels of polyphenols, and this results in a higher metabolism. The effect lasts for two hours after drinking it!

Oolong helps your body choose fat as an energy source. It may even help block fat and carbohydrates from being absorbed.

2. White Tea

All true teas come from the same plant – the Camellia Sinensis. What makes them different is the way that they’re processed.

White tea is the least processed of all. It is dried naturally, out in the sun.

This makes it the richest source of antioxidants of all teas, and the best at boosting fat burning. It also contains special ingredients that help block fat cells from forming.

3. Rooibos Tea

If you haven’t tried rooibos tea, you really should.

Also known as red bush tea, this South African tea’s taste is less bitter than black or green teas. It has hints of vanilla without tasting herbal or flowery.

It is caffeine-free and rich in antioxidants and minerals like magnesium, calcium, and manganese.

Most important of all, it has a compound called Aspalathin that’s been shown to reduce hormones created by stress. You know – the ones that make you eat when you’re not hungry and send your body into fat-storing mode?

4. Mint Tea

Mint tea is one of the most comforting cups of tea around.

Whether you drink it hot or iced, it’s a soothing treat that can help you relax and drift off to sleep at night or calm your nerves during a hectic day.

Even better, a recent study showed that people who smelled peppermint leaves every couple of hours actually lost weight.

Now you have even more of a reason to drink it and breathe in its soothing smell!

Turns out that the odor of mint actually suppresses appetite.  Add it to your daily schedule, especially when you tend to be most hungry.

5. Green Tea

Green tea has become a fat-blasting favorite for people looking to slim down and shape up.

One study showed that adding 4 to 5 cups of green day per day along with a 25-minute-a-day workout added 2 pounds to one group’s weight loss as compared to a group eating the same, exercising the same, but not drinking the tea.

The reason? Catechins, a compound found in green tea that helps free fat from fat cells and boosts the liver’s fat-burning power.

With so many different flavors to choose from – and each offering such fantastic benefits – it’s easy to see why you should leave your kettle out on the stove and make tea a constant companion.

Does this sound familiar?

You've been staying committed to your nutrition plan. You're focusing on eating wholesome foods every day.

As you feel yourself slimming down, you can't help but feel a great sense of excitement growing in you.

Until one day, you look in the mirror and it looks like you’ve gained all the weight you’ve just lost – and then some right back.

The culprit? Bloating.

It’s something that impacts just about everyone at some point or another, some of us more than others. If you feel like bloating is keeping you from looking your best, it’s time to do something about it.

Most folks don't know what causes bloating, let alone what to do to put an end to it.

Today, we are going to clear the confusion. Here are 4 surprising culprits of bloating and what you can do about it.

1. Stress

That’s right – that work meeting you’re worried about or the fight you had with your spouse, could be the reason you’re feeling so bloated.

That ‘fight or flight’ response, causes your body to move blood away from your digestive tract. This makes it harder to break down the foods you’re eating.

The result? Food sits in your stomach longer, potentially causing major issues with bloating.

Fix it fast:

Practice regular deep breathing. Take time for yourself. Invest in any stress-busting tactics you can to use to calm that anxiety.

This won’t just help your bloat, but every single element of your wellbeing.

2. Chewing Gum

When most people think of the worst bloat-causing foods, rarely is chewing gum considered. But yet, it’s one of the leading causes.

Each time you chew your gum, you’re ingesting air.  Chew that gum hundreds of times before you spit it out and you can imagine how much oxygen has been brought into the body.

This extra oxygen will lead to gas and bloating

Fix it fast:

To remedy this situation, you’ll need to give up your gum habit as best as possible.

Try using mints to freshen your breath instead, which won’t have you gulping in all that oxygen.

Or, if you must chew gum, avoid one with artificial sweeteners. These can contribute to the excess gas and bloating problem as well. Just remember though that too much sugar in gum can contribute to cavities and even lead to weight gain.

3. Drinking Through A Straw

If you’re ordering a beverage at a restaurant, chances are it’s coming with a straw.

Just like with chewing gum, drinking through a straw is going to mean far more air is sucked in with each sip. This leads you to suffer the unwanted effect of bloating and gas.

Fix it fast:

Go for bottled drinks whenever you can when you’re in a restaurant. Simply ditch the straw completely. As fun as it may be to drink this way, it’s just not helping your cause.

4. Lactose Intolerance

Some people who get extreme stomach upset will quickly realize they are lactose intolerant. It’s not always that obvious for some.

Try and pinpoint whether your bloating is coming primarily after consuming dairy products. If it is, that may be your culprit.

Swap out dairy for other lactose-free options for a week or two and see if that doesn’t stop the problem.

Fix it fast:

Consider unsweetened almond milk, rice milk, or coconut milk to replace regular cow’s milk.

The next time you're feeling “not quite as slim yesterday“, consider these bloating causes.

The good news is that bloating tends to be an easy fix so that you can get back to feeling great again.

Here's a little clip I made for you when I was in Costa Rica.

I was at Juan Pablo Barahona's Conscious Living School. I went down there to study an ancient form of healing.

Juan Pa teaches about the healing benefits of fruits, healing benefits of movement and also just how it all ties into spirituality and becoming your best self.  He's been so gracious as to share this wonderful immune boosting recipe with us!

I think you'll find his teachings and this drink as powerful as I do!!
