7 Super Effective Home Remedies for Heartburn

Archives for March 2017

Acid reflux is an uncomfortable disease, to say the least.

Its main symptom is a burning sensation in the chest which is why it's commonly known as heartburn. Other unpleasant symptoms include burping, bloating, and a sour taste in your mouth, especially when liquid backs up into your throat. Not fun at all!

Acid reflux happens when the valve at the top of your stomach doesn’t close all the way. The acid in your stomach moves the wrong way, up into your esophagus.

Some people get heartburn from time to time but others suffer with it frequently, even daily. That's when you have a bigger problem that you want to get control of quickly.

Frequent acid reflux is also known as GERD, or “gastroesophageal reflux disease.” There are a few things that can put you at risk for it. These include:

  • Laying down right after a meal
  • Being overweight or obese

A recent study found that weight gain of 10 to 20 pounds was associated with a threefold increase in heartburn symptoms.

  • Eating spicy or fatty foods, chocolate or mint
  • Drinking coffee, tea, alcohol or drinks with bubbles
  • Smoking
  • Being pregnant
  • Some drugs, including blood pressure medicine, Aspirin or Ibuprofen and muscle relaxers

The good news is that people who have acid reflux have a few options for how to deal with their condition.

There have been a lot of recent findings on the detrimental impact of long-term use of common prescription medications used to treat GERD. This may leave you searching for an alternative, more natural way to find relief.

7 Natural Remedies for Acid Reflux

1. Baking Soda

Remember the old “plop plop fizz fizz” ads for Alka-Seltzer? The popular over the counter medicine was only made of three things. One is baking soda or Sodium Bicarbonate. It works because it turns the acid in your stomach into a lower pH. But you don’t need to take a pill or go to the drug store.

Just put between 1/2 a teaspoon and 1 whole teaspoon of baking soda into 8 ounces of fresh water. Stir it and drink it down.

2. Aloe Juice

The aloe plant is known for healing skin burns. The good news is that it also reduces burning on the inside. Drinking

Drinking a ½ cup of aloe juice before meals should do the trick. Just know ahead of time that it is also a laxative, so be careful!

3. Apple Cider Vinegar

It may sound strange that adding more acid to a problem caused by acid would work, but it does. Here’s why. When you put a high-acid fluid next to the valve at the top of your stomach, it is a signal that it should tighten up and close.

Just mix 3 teaspoons of raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar with 6 to 8 ounces of fresh water. Drink it up before each meal to help relieve heartburn.

4. Bananas or Apples

Both neutralize the acid in your stomach. You can either eat a banana or an apple before bed to ease your heartburn pain.

5. Gingerroot Tea

Ginger is well known for curing nausea, and it helps with acid too.

The tea is easy to make. Just take a few slices of fresh, peeled ginger and steep them in 2 cups of boiling water.

Remove the ginger and drink about 20 minutes before a meal.

6. Mustard

Mustard has a low level of acid in it. The acid comes from the vinegar that’s used to make it. It will have the same effect as apple cider vinegar, making the valve close and neutralizing the pain.

7. Cilantro

Fresh cilantro is a tasty way to get relief. It stimulates the release of digestive enzymes and if you just love spicy food, adding a handful of fresh cilantro can be a useful hack to reduce heartburn symptoms that often follow those spicy meals.

When we talk about the world’s great Superfoods, quinoa is at the top of most lists. There are a lot of reasons for this.

This ancient food is high in protein. Many people think that it's a grain, but it's actually the seed of a plant that's in the same family as spinach.

It has twice as much fiber as almost any other grain and is high in iron and other essential minerals.

Quinoa can be purchased in red, white, black and a mix of colors. All are easy to prepare and delicious!

What Makes Quinoa Such a Healthy Choice? (and does the color matter?)

Quinoa is available in many different colors. Each color is known by a number of different names, which can make things confusing!

White quinoa has been called ivory, blond, golden, and tan. Its taste is the mildest of all the quinoa colors. It also cooks up lighter and fluffier than any of the other colors, and it's the fastest cooking of all the quinoa colors.

Red quinoa ends up a brown color once it is cooked. It has a nuttier flavor and a chewier feel in the mouth than white quinoa does.

Black quinoa is sweeter and nuttier than red quinoa, while purple and orange quinoa varieties are closer in taste to the red.

The darker quinoa colors add great interest to salads, especially because they hold up better to cooking and other textures. Both take about 4 or 5 minutes longer to cook than white quinoa does.

If you can’t choose which quinoa color to buy, you can always choose the rainbow quinoa. This combines all the colors and textures and makes an excellent choice for side dishes or main courses.

From a nutritional standpoint, all of the colors of quinoa offer the same benefits.

Quinoa of any color is:

1. High in iron, magnesium, and B-vitamins
2. High in calcium, potassium, vitamin E and phosphorus.
3. Gluten free and is a great replacement for pasta and other wheat-based products
4. A complete source of protein since quinoa contains all 9 essential amino acids.

Quinoa has both soluble and insoluble fiber. It has a low glycemic index, which means it helps stabilize blood sugar levels. It can improve insulin sensitivity and help you to feel fuller longer.

This makes it a great food to eat if you are trying to lose weight. Its high levels of magnesium can help fight heart disease, keep blood pressure stable and can even fight osteoporosis.

You can use quinoa for every meal of the day, or even for a snack.

It’s a smart idea to cook up a batch at the beginning of the week with no seasoning. Then you can add fruit for a healthy breakfast, mix it into a salad or soup for lunch, or use it as a side dish or ingredient in the main course for dinner.

Has your doctor, or a friend, ever suggested that you try psyllium husks? There are a lot of reasons why they might have.

Psyllium is a natural form of fiber that comes from a plant called Plantago ovata. It's made from the husks of the plant’s seeds. You can buy it as whole husks or as a powder.

Whichever you choose, psyllium husk is a high fiber choice that offers a number of important benefits.

A diet that is high in fiber is considered essential to human health. It improves both digestive and heart health, and helps with both weight and blood sugar control.

The best way to get fiber is still through our diets, by eating plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables.

When used as a supplement, psyllium husks can help with a number of health issues, including:

  • Constipation
  • Irritable bowel syndrome
  • Crohn’s disease
  • Ulcerative colitis
  • Diverticulosis
  • High cholesterol
  • Weight control
  • Diabetes

Though some people think that psyllium husks are a whole grain, they are not.

Whole grains contain the entire seed kernel – both the outer coating and the inner germ. Psyllium’s husks are the part that is high in fiber, and it is milled separately from the seed.

Psyllium husk is what is known as a bulking fiber. That means that when you eat it, it draws water from the colon.

Once it has expanded, it passes through the colon and sweeps out waste. It does the same to cholesterol in the heart’s arteries. Here are just a few of psyllium husk’s benefits.

4 Benefits of Taking Psyllium Husks

1. Psyllium relieves constipation – The soluble fiber in psyllium is one of the best answers to constipation. The husks swell in your digestive tract. This stimulates the intestines and moves stool through more quickly. It also softens the stool by increasing the amount of water that it holds.

Psyllium is also a good way to treat diarrhea. It does this by absorbing extra water in the intestines.

2. Psyllium lowers cholesterol – Studies show that after 8 weeks of adding psyllium husks to their diet, people with high cholesterol reduced their total levels by almost 15%. LDL levels (the bad cholesterol) dropped by over 20%.

3. Psyllium manages blood sugar – This is important for people who have been diagnosed with diabetes and for those who are pre-diabetic.

4. Psyllium helps manage weight – Because psyllium husk makes us feel more full, it keeps us from eating too much. We eat less, and that helps to prevent weight gain.

How to Use Psyllium Husks

You can get psyllium husks in many forms from health food stores, but you should make sure that it is 100% pure. You can take it by mixing one tablespoon with a glass of water or any other liquid up to three times per day.

Psyllium husks can be used in baking too. It’s gluten free, and adding it to a favorite bread recipe is a great way to add it to your diet. You just need to increase the amount of liquid that you use to get the right consistency.
