Why Your Metabolism is Not Burning Fat

Archives for October 2014

Metabolism is the process by which your body converts food into energy. Many people hold the belief that fat people have low metabolism rates and skinny people have high metabolism rates.

However, the process is not that simple.

Your metabolism depends on three separate factors, and how it works affects how much you weigh.

Metabolism is determined by the amount of calories you consume, factors such as age and sex, and how physically active you are.

If you consume too many calories, you will eventually gain weight.

Each human body is designed to run on a certain calorie amount. This can vary from person to person, but is between 1500 and 2500 calories for most adults. If you are trying to lose weight, it will be less.

don't endorse calories counting but encourage nutrient counting instead. More important than the number of calories is the quality of those calories. Furthermore empty calories lead to cravings and overeating.

Men generally need more calories per day than women, unless the woman is pregnant or breastfeeding.

The rate at which your body burns these calories is your metabolism; if you burn them more slowly, you’ll gain weight. If you burn through extra calories quickly, you’ll maintain your weight.

Factors such as age, body composition, and sex also determine metabolism.

If your body contains more muscle, your metabolism will be faster. If it contains more fat, your body will be slower.

For this reason, women's metabolism often slows down after pregnancy. Excess fat is accumulated and stored on the hips and breasts.

After pregnancy, it can be harder to lose this weight. Age also affects your metabolism; as you age, your metabolism slows down.

This can lead to “middle age spread” if you don't take action to burn those extra calories and kick your metabolism into high gear.

Your rate of physical activity greatly affects your metabolism.

This is good news; it means you have some control over the situation! If your metabolism is slowing down due to age, gender, or other factors, you can boost it by exercising.

When you choose to exercise regularly and eat a healthy diet, weight loss is possible. Your metabolism will increase as you add muscle to your body.

Remember; muscle burns more calories than fat!

To jump-start your metabolism, you may need to change the foods you're consuming daily and up the amount of exercise you are doing.

Exercise is so beneficial to the body for reasons aside from weight loss but diet plays an even bigger role.

Choose body resistance exercises combined with a little cardio for maximum impact. Cardio burns fat, and weight training will add muscle. Both can greatly increase your metabolism, leading to healthy fat loss.

With Fall Holidays in full swing there are pumpkin temptations abound! Pumpkin is such a naturally healthy food that's high in fiber and key nutrients.

That bright orange color is from all the carotenoids like beta-carotene that support the health of eyes and other organs. The high fiber makes pumpkin filling and helps you feel full longer.

This is my go-to smoothie this time of year for when a hankering strikes me for one of those expensive sugar and fat laden pumpkin spice coffee drinks.  And I don't mean to tell you not to indulge in SOME of these seasonal treats over the Holidays but it's all about finding healthier options to satisfy our less healthy habits.

Danette May Recipe

Nutritional Information: 1 drink = (¼ cup protein, ¼ cup veggies, ¼ cup fruit, ¼ cup carbs)

With this healthy recipe, pumpkin lovers can get their fix every day this Fall and still feel confident and healthy in the Holiday photos 🙂

Coconut oil is one of the best weapons you have to fight weight gain. It is a one of those foods that is so beneficial to the body but has received little notice.

Coconut oil has beneficial fatty acids that provide a boost to your metabolism.

If you’re trying to lose weight, this should be music to your ears. Every little technique to boost your metabolic rate should be employed so that you are a fat burning furnace around the clock.

Unlike normal hydrogenated oils which are extremely bad for your body, coconut oil has many health benefits.

Coconut oil contains fatty acids that will curb your appetite. You will be less hungry and eat less.

Coconut oil will make things a little easier by reducing your hunger pangs. So, not only does it boost your metabolism; it also decreases your calorie intake. That’s a winning fat loss combo.

Studies have shown that coconut oil also targets fat loss in the abdominal region. This is one of the most stubborn areas to lose fat in.

Only by losing the fat here can you see your six pack. Now, to the ordinary person trying to shed weight, the six pack may not be their goal.

However, if coconut oil can help people see their abs, imagine how beneficial it could be to the average person trying to lose weight.

Coconut-Oil-Weight-Loss

Abdominal fat is known as visceral fat and is a dangerous kind of fat that leads to inflammation, cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Losing visceral fat will improve your health and reduce your risk of disease.

Coconut oil contains 66% “healthy” saturated fats that help to increase protein absorption and aids in fat oxidation.

It lowers bad cholesterol levels, raises good cholesterol levels, has antioxidant properties, boosts brain power and slows down aging.

So how do you use coconut oil in your diet?

It’s really simple. You can use it in place of normal oils. Use it to lightly fry your eggs or chicken. The oil reaches liquid state when heated and has a pleasant aroma and light taste that complements most foods.

Coconut oil is slightly fattier than normal oils so use it in moderation.

Even if it is full of good fats, we must always be aware of how much we are consuming. Responsible eating is a cornerstone for weight loss.

Coconut Oil Healthy Fat Edited

There are 2 kinds of coconut oil. Extra virgin coconut oil and refined coconut oil. The extra virgin version is a better choice. It is produced using better methods and in more sanitary conditions.

However, extra virgin coconut oil has a stronger taste. So, those who are not used to consuming coconut oil may find the taste too strong for their liking.

As with all things, start slowly and use coconut oil sparingly till you get used to the taste and grow to like it. Do your research on coconut oil and you will see that it is definitely one of those foods you want as part of your diet.

One of the most common questions I get is about which bread to buy. The truth is that when it comes to bread, you are often better off just baking your own. It doesn't have to be labor intensive and you will always know exactly what you are eating.

Most breads on grocery shelves are loaded with sugars and preservative and what's worse is that even the ‘healthy' breads contain wheat and wheat products. Wheat causes inflammation in our guts and I avoid it altogether. You should too!

This recipe is quick and  there's nothing like the smell of bread in the oven. These are great as buns for your hamburger, or used as a sandwich. I make a sandwich for lunch using these with my Fat Burning  Chicken Salad.

This recipe makes about 6 pancake sized bread rounds.

Yummy and Healthy Bread

Yield: 6 pancake sized bread rounds

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 1/2 cups almond flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 cup Greek yogurt (can substitute unsweetened coconut or almond milk)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter or unrefined coconut oil
  • 3 large eggs
  • 2 tablespoons raw honey or 100% maple syrup

DIRECTIONS:

1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. Blend all of the ingredients in a food processor until smooth. Use a whisk and a small bowl if you prefer.

3. Spoon mixture into rounds, 2 – 3” in diameter on the prepared baking sheet.

4. Spread the mixture thin like you would be making thin pancakes leaving 2” between rounds.

5. Bake 15 – 20 minutes until golden and cooked through.

6. Using a spatula, slide under and remove to a cooling rack.

7. Store in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

Enjoy!!

Hope you enjoy this hot out of the oven. This is so much healthier than what you could buy at a store so you can feel good about what you are eating. What a delicious way to lose weight!

How can you be addicted to a substance you have to consume to stay alive? Is it possible to be addicted to food? Researchers say yes.

When scanning the brain of a food addict thinking about food, the scan shows changes nearly identical with the brain changes of a drug addict or alcoholic thinking about drinking or drugs.

Most of the time the food being contemplated by the food addict is rich and calorie dense, such as pizza, chocolate cake and ice cream, or pasta with cream sauce.

Another similarity is that food addicts like drug addicts, and alcoholics, have fewer receptors for dopamine, the feel good hormone. It could be that in order to feel good, food addicts have to eat more in order to reach the same state as normal people.

Over eating leads to the brain over emphasizing the sensation and pleasure of eating by decreasing the awareness of other body parts, than the mouth. Food addicts often go through similar withdrawal symptoms like drug addicts. These symptoms include anger, depression, irritability and moodiness.

Food addiction can be controlled.

brain-food1

Even if you're not addicted to food, the tips below can help you lose weight.

  • Keep a journal. Writing down what you eat and how you feel when you eat can help you pinpoint danger areas. Seeing what you've eaten in a 24 hour period brings home just how much of your life is controlled by food.
  • Know your triggers and avoid them. Certain foods are triggers to out of control eating. If you know what they are you can avoid them. Triggers can also include events, such as holidays, and people. If you know someone irritates you and your reaction is to eat, avoid that person if possible.
  • Focus on the food. It sounds counter productive to emphasize food when that's all you can think about. The idea is to focus on foods that you sincerely enjoy, not just on filling up your stomach with whatever is at hand. Food addicts in some ways have it rougher than other addicts, they can't just give up food.
  • Slow down when you eat. Use small plates. Put your fork down between bites. Have multiple courses rather than everything on the table or on your plate at once. Drink water between bites. Take at least 30 minutes to eat your meals.
  • Join a support group. People who are facing the same challenges as you are can provide the positive support you need. Knowing you're not alone can boost your morale.

Most importantly, don't give up. Your first efforts at controlling food consumption might not be successful, but that doesn't mean all your efforts will fail. See the positive progress you've made rather than the back sliding.

If you love the crunchy, salty goodness of potato chips but don't love all the fat then you really need to try this recipe.

It's quick and easy and there is nothing quite like hot, fresh sweet potato chips straight out of my own oven.

We like to snack on these for movie nights and I pack them in lunches for my kids if there happen to be any left over. Sweet potatoes are abundant this time of year and they are one of the GOOD carbs you should eat.

Nutritional Information: (½ cup = ½ cup carbs, ½ tbsp. fat)

They come out sweet, and salty and crunchy! Yum! Now we are talking!
