Why You Need To Know About EMFs (And How They Affect Your Well-Being)

You may be seeing the acronym EMF coming through your newsfeed a lot lately and you may even be witnessing your coworkers and friends wearing “blue blocker” eyeglasses. So what’s the deal with EMFs and are they something you should be concerned about?

Let’s take a look.

What Are EMFs?

EMF stands for electric and magnetic fields and, according to the National Institute of Environmental Health Services, EMFs are, “invisible areas of energy, often referred to as radiation, that are associated with the use of electrical power and various forms of natural and man-made lighting.”

Now, if the “man-made lighting” bit caught your eye, you’re not alone. With the massive increase in how we as a society use devices that throw off man-made lighting, you can imagine how much EMFs may impact you.

Where EMFs Are Found

EMFs are all around us. Here are just a few avenues for exposure:

  • Communication towers and equipment
  • High voltage power lines
  • TV and radio transmitters
  • Electrical equipment at home and work
  • Cell phones
  • Microwaves
  • Wi-Fi routers
  • Computers

Use or have exposure to any of those things during the course of your day? I thought you might!

How EMFs Affect Your Health

There are differing opinions and study results on whether the non-ionizing radiation (aka low-level radiation) given off by things like microwaves and Bluetooth devices is harmful, but since some studies have shown very high exposure to EMFs may cause neurological and psychiatric problems, leukemia, and even glioma (a brain and spinal cord cancer), you’re right to want to learn more and to protect yourself from possible overexposure.

Other symptoms of high EMF exposure may include changes to the body’s nervous system, including:

  • Headaches
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Depression, irritability, and anxiety
  • Concentration challenges and memory problems
  • Tiredness and fatigue
  • Changes in electrical activity within the brain

While it may be hard to trace symptoms like this back to EMF exposure specifically, and more long-term studies need to take place, since you’re someone who makes their health a priority, it’s important to understand the possible effects of EMF exposure.

You should also know that the blue light and EMFs emitted from our digital screens can disrupt circadian rhythms (our body’s sleep-wake cycle). Thankfully, we’re becoming more educated about this, and this is why you’ll see more and more of your friends and colleagues reaching for blue light-blocking glasses.

While there’s more studying that needs to be done on the effects of EMFs, it’s not a bad idea to distance yourself from high exposure. Situate yourself away from the microwave when you’re using it, use your cell phone’s speakerphone function instead of holding the phone to your ear, and close your devices an hour before you go to bed.
