Help! Exercise is boring!

If you find yourself saying this, you’re not alone. Many, many people hate exercise.

Yes, hate is a strong word but it’s the right word here. They hate to sweat, they hate the aches, and they just hate it all.

All too often, the people who hate exercise the most are the ones who need it most.

We live in an age where people have very short attention spans and constantly need to be entertained. We’re always on our smartphones looking at YouTube videos, playing games on Facebook or just doing something or another to amuse ourselves.

So, exercise drops right down on the to-do list.

When you embark on a weight loss program, exercise is crucial to shedding the pounds. Even those who do not want to lose weight, should be exercising on a daily basis.

So what do you do if you hate to exercise? What do you do if it gets boring?

This article is going to keep it real. For those trying to lose weight and get in shape, you will have to do some cardio sessions and even more resistance training.

Now, resistance training is more or less fixed. Either you will be using weights, kettle bells, bands, body weight or other contraptions that simulate resistance. I recommend body weight resistance because you always have everything you need for a complete workout with you at all times

If you do not like any of these methods, you should learn to at least appreciate the huge benefits. You will still have to do them if you want to build muscle.

Yes, even women should be doing some resistance training to tone your muscles and be lean. Do not worry. You will not become muscle bound. Men have a tough enough time building muscle as it is. With lower testosterone levels, it’s much harder for women to become all “muscly”.

So, resistance training is a must. Yes, your muscles will ache.  But you must admit, it is a GOOD ache! Yes, you will struggle and pant and groan as you face the resistance. But, this is what it takes.

And, you know how good you always feel right after a workout? Focus on THAT feeling to get you started.

Use techno music or heavy metal or whatever music you like to perk you up. Change your music whenever it stops motivating you to go all out. Record your progress and always try to beat your own records. Get a training partner who has a sense of humor and pushes you if you slack off. These are some of the things you could do to alleviate the boredom. If you want to workout every day with me, I will keep you motivated! As for cardio…

You have a whole range of choices from cycling, rowing, skipping, running, kickboxing, Zumba, etc. Cardio sessions can be fun if you just find out what you like doing. Ask your local gym what group classes they have for cardio. Join one that looks fun.

However, if you really want to lose weight as soon as possible, guess what? You don't have to go hardcore but you DO have to go. Interval sprinting or rowing at high speeds or spinning. These can be monotonous and will knock the breath out of you. There is no fun in high intensity cardio. You will be gasping for air and cursing. But…the good news is, you only need a few minutes of cardio per week.

The fat burning effects of all exercise will last for hours! One of the fastest ways to lose weight.

In life there is a trade-off. A healthy body comes at a price. That price could be exercising even when you dread it or skipping relaxation time to exercise.  It all depends on how bad you want it. If you truly want to shed the pounds and gain more energy, you will get your body in motion. Believe me when I say, YOU are so WORTH it!!

Yours in Health,

Danette
