The 4 “secret” spices that boost your metabolism

Developing a good habit can be difficult, but it’s a lot less challenging than kicking a bad one! You might be surprised to know that there is one good habit that can not only boost your metabolism and help you lose weight faster, but it’s also easy to build:

spicing up your meals.

Incorporating spicy foods and utilizing spices in your meals is not only a great way to add flavor, but it may just be the edge you need to lose those stubborn pounds. Sound like a fun habit to develop? It is – which is why this is such a no-brainer!

You already know that using hot chili peppers and cayenne can awaken your taste buds, but the substance that’s in those zesty spices, an antioxidant known as capsaicin, can raise the body’s metabolic rate which in turn helps you lose weight faster. There have also been some studies that suggest capsaicin, which is what makes them taste hot, may stimulate brain chemicals that help you feel more satisfied which can prevent overeating.

Did you know that cayenne peppers have actually been used as a treatment for obesity? Both habaneros and jalapenos are known to get the heart pumping and even raise body temperature which also increases your metabolic rate.

Adding spices to your foods, instead of things like butter or cream, also helps you save calories without having to sacrifice flavor.

A cabinet filled with spices can be one of your best weapons for fighting flab.

Don’t be afraid to use them! If you aren’t sure how, or which to use, here are a few ideas that can help.

Ginger

This spice has properties known to increase metabolism. Research has found that it contains qualities that may help suppress the appetite, possibly playing a role in successful, long term weight loss. Try cooking with real ginger or sipping ginger tea.

Turmeric

Turmeric is commonly found in Indian dishes and curries. It’s the spice that gives curry that orange-yellow hue. It contains curcumin, a compound that was found in several animal studies to possibly help weight loss efforts through the regulation of blood sugar levels as well as its influence on body fat composition.  To boost healthy gut bacteria and enhance digestion, I recommend Turmeric + Ginger Capsules. Turmeric goes great with cruciferous veggies. Try sprinkling it on broccoli, kale or cauliflower. It’s also a great match for soups and stews.

Cumin

cumin

This savory cooking spice is frequently found in Latin American, Mexican, Asian and African dishes. It’s another spice known to raise body temperature and metabolism, providing a great boost to your weight loss efforts.  You can use it in curry, or as a replacement for black pepper. Add it to vegetables or lean grilled beef. Cumin and sweet potatoes are surprisingly good together.

Cinnamon

Is there anyone who doesn’t like cinnamon? This is another fabulous spice known to aid weight loss efforts. It helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and as high blood sugar levels can lead to increased storage of body fat, this spice helps to prevent this which allows you to lose weight easier. It can also help you feel satisfied longer so that you’ll eat less. Add a teaspoon to herbal tea, sprinkle it on your oatmeal, or even onto fresh fruit!

Yum. Weight loss never tasted so good!
