9 Home Remedies for Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs) are miserable. They're also very common, especially for women.

They can hit at any time and impact any part of your urinary system, including your bladder, your kidneys, and your urethra. Most UTIs need a doctor’s care and a dose of antibiotics but there are also steps you can take to prevent them.

If you are prone to UTIs, take note of these helpful hints: they may keep you from having to make another trip to see your physician and your pharmacist.

9 Home Remedies to Tame Your Urinary Tract Infection

1. Drink loads of water & Take D-mannose. ice cold water bottles home remedies urinary tract infection

This may be tough, as a UTI can make it painful to urinate. But the more water you drink, the more germs you flush out of your system.

Drink 8 glasses of water per day at a bare minimum. Work your way up to drinking a gallon of water a day to really clear out bacteria and improve your overall health.

D-mannose is the go-to supplement that works (and usually in only a couple of days.) It's made from the sugars found in cranberry juice and you can find it in health food stores.

D-mannose is better than cranberry juice alone because it's a concentrated version of the active ingredient in the cranberry juice that's synonymous with curing UTI's. Though D-mannose is technically a sugar, it still doesn't have as much sugar as you'd get from drinking cranberry juice.

2. Put baking soda in your morning glass of water.

When you wake up and grab your first glass of water, stir a teaspoon of baking soda into it.

Baking soda is alkaline. It will cut the acid in your urine and get rid of the burn of a UTI.

3. Put parsley in your water.

If you want to make your UTI go away faster, put a handful of parsley into a gallon of water in your fridge or make some parsley tea, and drink it throughout the day.

Parsley is a powerful diuretic. It makes the water you drink even more effective.

4. Try chewing celery seeds. celery seeds home remedies urinary tract infection

Celery seeds are another effective diuretic that can help you clear out your kidneys. You can either chew the seeds whole or add them to boiling water and then let the mixture cool.

5. Eat cucumbers.

Cucumbers are a good-for-you snack that is high in water content. Eating them not only gives you loads of Vitamin K, magnesium and potassium, it can also put extra fluid in your system.

6. Avoid citrus.

Citrus fruit and juice is delicious and has many health benefits, but it is also high in acid. Because acid makes it painful to urinate, you should cut down on it if you get UTIs often.

Also avoid coffee and carbonated drinks, as they can irritate the lining of the bladder.

7. Add apple cider vinegar or prune juice to your water.

The acid in both of these products can help reset the pH in your urine.

When shopping for ACV just be sure the label says it contains “the mother.” For prune juice be certain there are no added sugars. If you can juice your own, that's even better.

8. Eat raw garlic. garlic home remedies urinary tract infection

Amazing but true, garlic has been proven to be a powerful anti-inflammatory food. It also contains sulfur and allicin, both of which can kill bacteria.

It's important to make sure that the garlic is raw and that it is crushed and exposed to air for ten minutes before eating it. This activates its germ-killing properties.

9. Make horse gram water.

Horse gram is a kind of legume that can be found in Indian food markets. It's the lentil that is richest in protein and is also high in iron and calcium.

By soaking horse gram in water overnight and then drinking it four to five times a day, you can clean out your kidneys and your urine.

If your pain increases or the infection persists seek medical attention to avoid serious complications. A urinary tract infection, when left untreated, can be life-threatening.
